Build A Dog Kennel With Proper Dog Kennel Plans To Keep Your Pet Healthy And Happy

My wife was not at all happy with me when I brought home a stray dog that was quite dirty from living outside for so long. It had also forgotten whatever house training habits it had ever had. But what could I do? The poor thing was friendly, lovable and in desperate need of food and shelter.

We decided to have this wayward traveler checked out by the vet, then give it a safe, comfortable place to live in our backyard. With shelter in mind, I went onto the Internet and made a search for dog kennel plans.

Choosing the right plans from many Internet options

I was surprised to see how many options are available for someone interested in building a safe, functional and attractive structure where they could house their pooch. I found some great dog kennel plans that included a dog run in the design.

Once I started my Internet search and determined which dog kennel plans best suited my needs, I picked up important information regarding the best features to incorporate into a proper dog kennel.

Select the right building materials

For example, it is important to remember that in addition to being comfortable for your pet, the dog kennel that you build must be made out of materials capable of withstanding a harsh, outdoor environment.

Initially, you might consider using pressure treated wood because of its ability to resist water and insects. But chemicals forced into the wood during processing could make your dog sick — especially if he is young and likes to chew things.

It’s safe to use pressure treated lumber to construct closed-in portions of your dog kennel frame that your pet can’t reach. However, you should use either a composite building material or a type of wood like cedar that can withstand the weather and resists rotting. Another good thing about cedar is that it smells good and helps to keep the fleas away.

Important shelter design features

When determining a kennel design, make sure you choose dog kennel plans that will not only enable your dog to bask in the sun. You’ll want your design to also provide shade, cross ventilation and relief from the heat.

You’ll want a shelter you can line with clean straw or a blanket to keep your dog warm, especially if you live in an area where the temperatures drop. Some dog owners even use a special pet heating pad that covers a portion of the shelter’s floor where their pet can lie down and stay warm during the coldest weather.

Make sure you build a dog kennel that provides lots of space and room in which your pet can move around — particularly if you must keep your pet confined for long periods. A spacious dog kennel will not only help keep your pooch from getting bored and developing bad habits — like chewing on his shelter — it will help to keep him healthy and happy.
